Click on the “Start” button, and don’t blink while you try and recognize the chunks that are shown (for 1/50 of a second only).
See for yourself:
- You could not jump back in this exercise and still grasped most or all of it. And in much less time than normally when reading (1/4 second there)!
- You automatically grasped the chunks as such – word-by-word reading was impossible.
- You have – exceptionally – grasped everything visually, i.e. you have not heard anything internally (subvocalized), there was no time for that. In normal reading, however, you hear at least the contextual cues (e.g. important words).
